Sri Lanka’s Favourite Ice-cream Elephant House Assures Environmental Protection in Nuwara Eliya during the season

During the Sinhala and Tamil Avurudu holiday many Sri Lankans spend time with loved ones and travel across the country celebrating a time of togetherness and tradition.

Regrettably, it also translates into high levels of mismanaged waste generated especially in popular holiday destinations across the country.

Demonstrating its commitment to minimize the negative impact on the environment, Sri Lanka’s favourite ice-cream, Elephant House initiated a waste disposal mechanism for the collection and disposal of high-volume waste generated during the season in Nuwara Eliya.

As thousands gathered in Nuwara Eliya, to enjoy the cool climes and celebrate the dawn of Avurudu, Elephant House’s purposefully planned corporate social responsibility project created a meaningful impact in helping to keep the city clean.

In collaboration with the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, Elephant House distributed garbage bins around the city.

The bins were placed in popular locations around the city and venues including near Gregory Lake and surrounding areas, which expected a higher foot fall thus ensuring everyone in Nuwara Eliya enjoyed the festivities more responsibly, protecting the environment as well.

Serving the community and continuously pursuing environmental responsibility has been a hallmark of the company.

Elephant House has unceasingly championed efforts to ensure the responsible disposal of plastic waste.

As partners in John Keells Group’s social entrepreneurship initiative ‘PlasticCycle,’ one of the objectives of the company is to responsibly drive the disposal and recycling of plastic waste.

Ceylon Cold Stores is the manufacturer of Elephant House Ice Cream and beverages; a subsidiary of John Keells Holdings PLC (JKH), a Sri Lankan company, which is also the country’s largest listed conglomerate in the Colombo Stock Exchange, operating over 70 companies in 7 diverse industry sectors.

JKH provides employment to over 13,000 persons and has been ranked as Sri Lanka’s ‘Most Respected Entity’ for 13 years.

Whilst being a full member of the World Economic Forum and a Member of the UN Global Compact, JKH drives its vision of “empowering the nation for tomorrow,” through the John Keells Foundation.
