Achievers’ glorious night - SLT Silk Sports Award Ceremony 2019

The national telecommunication service provider of the country, Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), took another giant leap in expanding its encouragement for the betterment of Sri Lankan sports in honouring athletes who demonstrated exceptional talent, determination and dedication for the fifth consecutive year with SLT Silk Sports Awards 2019.

The SLT Silk Sports Awards ceremony recognized and tributed sportsmen and women on the achievements they have accomplished in year 2019 on many categories.


As a pioneering national entity, SLT believes that it is SLT’s sincere obligation to empower Sri Lankan sports arena under the provisions of SLT- CSR activities.

The awards ceremony was held at BMICH, Colombo recently with the participation of esteemed guests and invitees.


Every category in sports arena was recognized at this award ceremony in order to pave more successful avenues in the sports industry.

Awards were distributed under two major categories.


Under the major award category, Sri Lanka’s netball queen, Tharjini Sivalingam was awarded as the Most Popular Sports Personality of the Year.


Veteran national sports administrator, Sunil Jayaweera was recognised with prestigious SLT Silk Lifetime Achievement Award.


In addition, Sri Lankan opening batting hero Roshan Mahanama was awarded with the Duncan White Award for Sports Excellence & Contribution award.


Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s promising swimmer, Mathew Abeysinghe, the SAG seven gold medallist won the Silk Sportsman of the year award, while Nalanda cricket captain Lakshitha Munasinghe was named as the Outstanding School Sports Personality of the year, following his record-breaking performances in 2019.

Sri Lankan Deaf Cricket Team became the SLT Silk Team of the year whereas ICC cricket umpire Kumar Dharmasena was named as the Most Outstanding Contributor for International Sports.

The Outstanding Sports Scientific Publication of the Year award was won by Dr. Samantha Nanayakkara whose PhD thesis was on Social Psychology of Sports.


National weightlifting coach R. B. Wickremasinghe was awarded as the Outstanding Coach of the Year.


Veteran sports journalist Dinesh Weerawansa was honoured for his services in promoting sports in Sri Lanka with the ‘Outstanding Contributor to Sports Journalism’ award.

Accordingly, SLT Silk Sports Awards ceremony added more value to the sports culture in the country and almost all the leading sports personalities got together to celebrate the achievements of extraordinary sports-stars who received recognition for their outstanding accomplishments.


Also SLT expects to drive the country’s sports expanding it for international level.


At the same time, it is SLT’s fathomable yearning to stretch an initiative to recognize and uplift brave Sri Lankan athletes and similarly talented role models who support the players in flooring vibrant and successful trails for more profound achievements to witness in the years to come.
