More than 100 people took part in the program, including the Hon. Mayor and Municipal Commissioner of the Anuradhapura Municipal Council, other council members, the Chief Medical Officer, students from selected schools, PHIs, and members of the Civil Security Department (CSD), as well as the Ecocycle team.
Since 2019, INSEE Ecocycle has given sustainable solutions for sorted non-recyclable and non-biodegradable municipal solid waste (MSW) in Anuradhapura, disposing of over 1300 MT of MSW waste that would otherwise have landed up in landfills.
To keep the city clean, the Ecocycle Anuradhapura City Cleaning initiative was launched in 2020 with the participation of all stakeholders.
Parallel to this event, a certificate presentation ceremony for students who volunteered for the Anuradhapura City Cleaning Programme was held, as well as a waste management awareness program to educate young future leaders on sustainable waste management practices.
A progress review conference was also conducted with Anuradhapura Municipal Council officers and other stakeholders to analyse how total waste solutions for the city could be improved.
The next initiative would be a long-term electronic waste management program.
Mr. Sanjeewa Chulakumara, Director at INSEE Ecocycle Lanka, said on the occasion,
"We are delighted to be a part of this CSR program for the second time, having begun in 2020, in collaboration with the Anuradhapura Municipal Council, and other stakeholders, to protect the Ancient City clean."
We will further strengthen this public-private relationship to establish these types of CSR projects and give continuous solutions for MSW management.
We consider this as a national imperative, and we would like to help the issue of MSW management on a national level by trying to implement more CSR activities, both as a pioneer in waste management and as a responsible corporate citizen."
Mr. Chulakumara also stated that INSEE Ecocycle has been assisting in the resolution of the country's municipal solid waste problem since 2011, beginning with the Gampaha and Kurunegala regions.
The Ecocycle partnership has grown into a large-scale collaboration led by INSEE that includes provincial authorities, local governments, and other FMCG giants covering 07 provinces including the Western, North Western, Central, North Central, Southern, Uva, and Sabaragamuwa provinces, working with more than 120 local authorities, and accepting over 12,000 metric tonnes per year of "non-recyclable, non-biodegradable post-consumer packaging wastes."
This is one of the excellent initiatives that INSEE Ecocycle is proud of in terms of cleaning up the country's waste sites.
