Upon Wednesday's news that Red Bull does not actually give consumers wings, the drinks firm paid over $13m into a reimbursement account, with those who felt they were misled by the product's false claim, invited to apply for a refund worth around $10-$15 before 2 March 2015.
However, as the news story was so widely publicised by the media, internet users swarmed to the site to reclaim their settlement but as no proof of purchase was required to claim, many fraudulent bids may have been entered.
The site was allegedly visited over 4.6 million times in the 24 hours since it was launched on Wednesday, causing the page to crash.
Buzzfeed reported that due to the mass influx of claimants, the settlement may actually drop substanitally, offering applicants as little as $3 each.
So, the good news is that the payment will be made into claimants’ accounts in under 150 days. The bad news is that it may not be a sum worth retrieving.
