Facebook begins auto-enhancing user photos

Facebook has begun rolling out a new auto enhancement algorithm for light, clarity and shadow on user generated images in a bid to banish low quality pictures from the platform.

The procedure is being applied to all pictures uploaded via iOS from today and will soon extend to Android, removing the need for people to manually filter their pics – although people will still retain the option to control the degree of enhancement applied or ditch it in favour of the original.

Designed to streamline the process of posting legible content on the move the technique is being seen as a bid by Facebook to keep up with rivals such as Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram in attracting budding photographers.

It replaces the old method of manually selecting individual filters with a binary on or off functionality.
