The event garnered the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Guest of Honour, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Chairman of Sri Lanka Climate Fund, and Keynote Speaker, Professor Sevvandi Jayakody, the Chair Professor of the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka.
The name 'HELIOS' derives inspiration from the Greek word for the Sun, symbolically emphasising its central role as the source of energy fuelling all forms of living beings and their sustainability.
The ESG strategy is established on seven fundamental pillars: Energy, Emissions, Biodiversity, Employee Engagement, Community Engagement, Safety and Governance.
These pillars serve as the cornerstone of the Group’s commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible corporate conduct, all guided by the ESG framework of its Parent Company, Hayleys PLC, referred to as the Hayleys Lifecode.
Mr. Ruwan Waidyaratne, Managing Director of the Advantis Group, emphasised the significance of the launch of the ESG strategy, stating,
"HELIOS embodies our strong commitment to a more sustainable future, reflecting Advantis Group's commitment to be acknowledged as a responsible corporate citizen.
It signifies our pledge to safeguard the environment, support communities, and uphold ethical and transparent business practices.
As Advantis continues to progress, we aim to set an example and inspire others in the transportation and logistics industry to embark on a journey towards positive change.
HELIOS is not merely a strategy; it serves as a guiding principle towards a more responsible and sustainable world.”
Speaking at the event, Professor Sevvandi Jayakody stated,
“Having collaborated closely with the Advantis team, it is clear that the company makes substantial and meaningful contributions to the environment.
Their significant role in the natural regeneration of mangroves through the Advantis Blue C initiative at Anawilundawa has contributed towards enhancing Sri Lanka's national blue carbon sinking capacity, actively aiding in the preservation and revitalisation of coastal ecosystems.
I wholeheartedly commend the team for their unwavering commitment and continued support to this vital cause.”
One of the main targets under the ‘Environment’ vertical, is the Group’s commitment to reduce the absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030.
This commitment is being realised through focused efforts in the use of renewable energy, alternative fuels, and low-carbon or zero emitting transportation solutions.
Simultaneously, the Group has established comprehensive targets to address various aspects within the ‘Social’ and ‘Governance’ spheres, as outlined within their ESG strategy framework.
In addition to the significant milestone of launching the Group's ESG strategy, the launch was also the first carbon-neutral event hosted by the Advantis Group.
The event’s Carbon Neutral Certificate, issued by the Sri Lanka Climate Fund, was handed over to Advantis, by Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment and Chairman of Sri Lanka Climate Fund.
Dr. Anil Jasinghe expressed his thoughts, stating,
“The introduction of a meaningful and impactful ESG strategy is crucial for both Advantis' sustainability and our nation as a whole.
It is encouraging to witness the private sector stepping up to address the pressing issue of climate change in such a proactive manner.
I commend Advantis for their commitment to protecting the environment and supporting the community, and I hope more companies will follow suit in the future.”
