Ambewala attracted 100000 visitors during the Avurudhu season

Businesscafe - Nestled amidst the misty hills and lush green pastures of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Ambewela Farms has become a premier destination for both dairy innovation and experiential tourism.

With its breathtaking surroundings and pioneering approach to dairy production, the farm continues to captivate thousands of local and international visitors each year.

Established in 1943 and privatized in 2001, Ambewela Farms has since undergone extensive modernization, positioning itself as the most advanced dairy operation in Sri Lanka and South Asia.

Today, the farm spans 1,185 acres across its Ambewela and Pattipola locations, sitting at an elevation of 6,000 feet above sea level — an ideal environment for nurturing livestock and growing nutrient-rich pastures.

Currently home to more than 4,000 cows, including Friesian and Ayrshire breeds, the farm boasts international best practices in animal welfare and dairy management.

Each animal’s health is continuously monitored via a centralized database system, and even minor ailments result in immediate care, underscoring the farm’s commitment to quality and ethical farming.

In addition to cattle, the farms are home to milking goats, stud bulls, rabbits, and turkeys, adding a vibrant and educational dimension for visiting families, especially children.

Goat’s milk and cheese produced on-site have become popular additions to the farm’s growing product portfolio.

Visitors are also treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the farm’s state-of-the-art production plant, where meticulous hygiene standards and cutting-edge equipment guarantee the highest product quality.

The farm’s open-door policy for student visits and research reflects its commitment to knowledge sharing and industry development.

Speaking on the growing appeal of the farm, Mr. Bandara, a senior representative, stated:

"Ambewela Dairy Farm receives a significant number of daily visitors, with one day this year recording over 9,000 guests.

We have invested heavily in enhancing our visitor facilities to offer a more enriching experience for everyone who comes through our gates.

During the last Avurudu week, there were more than 100,000 visiting the farms, even though the school holidays were short.

Ambewela Farms’ output speaks volumes about its operational efficiency and technological edge.

With an average yield of 40 liters per cow per day, a figure in line with top global benchmarks and far exceeding the Sri Lankan national average of 5 liters, the farm has set a new standard in productivity.

In 2024, Ambewela recorded a historic peak of 64,000 liters of milk produced in a single day, up from just 3,000 liters in 2001.

Today, the farm contributes over 20 million liters annually to the country’s dairy supply.

“From the beginning, our vision has been clear, to support and uplift Sri Lanka’s dairy industry,” said the CEO of Ambewela Farm Complex.

“With local milk currently meeting only 35% of national demand, we see enormous potential for growth.

Our focus is to reduce dependency on imports by delivering fresh, locally produced, high-quality dairy products.”

Since 2009, Ambewela has expanded its product portfolio beyond fresh milk to include UHT non-fat and flavored milks, malt-based food drinks, cultured dairy products, premium cheese, and a range of yoghurts, all made without preservatives or artificial additives.

A major milestone was achieved in 2019 with the launch of two fully automated dairy housing and milking systems, part of a LKR 5 billion modernization drive.

These systems doubled production capacity in just two years, placing Ambewela Farms firmly on par with world-class dairy operations.

As Ambewela Farms continues to innovate and expand, it remains steadfast in its mission: to elevate Sri Lanka’s dairy sector while offering a truly unique and memorable experience for all who visit.
